These holes can be tiny and just beginning (what dentists call “incipient”) or large enough to compromise most of the tooth. Cavities can form in baby and adult teeth—and understanding how they develop starts with knowing a little about tooth anatomy.
Think of a Tooth Like an M&M
Picture an M&M peanut candy. The outer, colorful shell is similar to enamel, the hard, protective layer on the outside of the tooth. Inside, the chocolate represents the dentin, a softer layer that makes up most of the tooth’s structure. At the very center of the M&M is the peanut, which stands in for the pulp—the living part of the tooth where the nerves and blood vessels reside. This part connects the tooth to the bone and gums and is responsible for sensing temperature, pressure, and pain.
But If Enamel Is So Strong, Why Do Cavities Form?
Enamel is the hardest substance in the body—a crystal structure tough enough to chew through just about anything. Its strength is a testament to the body’s incredible design. But enamel has a weakness: acid. Here’s how cavities form:
- Bits of food remain on the teeth after eating, especially sticky or sugary foods.
- These food particles feed the bacteria in our mouths.
